The United Nations Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen is wrapping up. I don’t know if they accomplished much, but I hope something comes of it. The time for discussion is long past, and the window of time for meaningful action is closing.
As the start of the new year approaches, I am asking myself and my family what new things we can do in the coming year to make a difference, just like the people in this video:
What will you do?

Hey!!! Happy Solstice, Yule and Saturnalia!!! (I made it through most of the commercial onslaught without getting too freaked out… so now I can breath again…and think bit more clearly…)
I wanted to wait a bit before completely watching this video, and writing anything. Thanks for posting it.
I liked it, but find that it is interesting that so for there are only, as of today, 4,775 views, and six comments. What global climate change??? Maybe the video needs an introduction by Britney Spears or Tiger Woods…?[maybe the potential former Ms. Woods will have some extra cash*** after the divorce for some help with some environmental marketing and activism...] I know, harsh, but true. It always sort of disturbs me as it is definitely the helpful and educational stuff online that does not generate the attention these kinds of pertinent issues deserve. But, then again that is why I just watched the movie “Idiocracy” again last night. The fifth time since it came out in 2006, and each new time I view it, I am amazed looking for clues and insights into its view on our current “Entertainment Civilization.” Or, perhaps we need to learn how to “Twitter” and learn how net text “e-tainmnt cvilzashun” so our brave new world can understand what we are trying to say…
The music sound track was interesting, it reminded me of Vangelis and the score for BladeRunner. Had the same sort of dystopian haunting theme to it.
So, to answer the question: “What would I do?” On a simple level, I started an experimental worm composter in my garage. Have to, as it gets freaking cold here. -14 below last week, and the worms will not survive outside very well, unless extremely well insulated in major containers. So far the system has about an odor factor of 2 on a scale of 10 as nasty, curdle your nose bad. And that “2″ is only when the compost drawers are opened and sniffed. So all in all it is going good so far.
I could go on with my list of 1,001 things to do, but next on my list is connecting with some new people to discuss developing local sustainable agriculture in the region. A challenging task, as it is a winter intense region and the growing season is at most three months long, with potential frost days all summer long. The pits, but makes for challenging gardening.
One more fun thing to add to the list here today, I went to the local coffee house and asked for empty burlap coffee bags to use in the garden for green yard waste that needs to be hauled to the landfill recycling center. These are very cool earth friendly bags, plus, the best part: I don’t have to use them scary as hell black plastic satan bags anymore. The coffee folks gave me the bags for free, so I left a nice tip for the counter angels…

I hadn’t noticed how few views that video had. And yet people watch Jersey Shore on MTV by the millions. Sometimes our culture really embarrasses me.

Forgot to mention about the burlap bags, they will last for years if taken care of, versus the plastic bags that struggle to be used 2 or three times.
One more thing, I am planning on learning how to make “Suet” for the winter bird feeding here. This will be fun, because I have always detested having to throw animal fat away in the garbage. So now there will be another secondary use for all that normally unused food resource.
